My 'free' tax filing site cost me $200 in identity theft cleanup

I used one of those pop-up tax sites last April (you know, the ones with the big 'free' banners). Turns out they sold my full name, address, and SSN from my return. Someone opened a credit card in my name a month later. I spent $200 on credit monitoring and report freezes to sort it out. Has anyone found a truly secure way to file online without this risk?

My dentist's office got hit with a data breach last year, same shady business model.

Wait, hold on. I actually see it the opposite way, @allen.kai. That breach sounds like a security failure, not a shady business plan. My buddy's small clinic got hacked too, and it was just outdated software. They weren't selling data, they were just cheap on IT updates.

Honestly, "cheap on IT updates" is the shady part to me now.

Guess the real cost was hidden in the fine print...
