Picked a hardware key over an authenticator app, no regrets 4 years later

Back in 2021 I had to choose between a YubiKey for $50 or just using Google Authenticator on my phone. I went with the key because I kept almost losing my phone in the walk-in cooler at work. Last month my phone died completely and I still got into my email and bank without any hassle. Anyone else made the switch after getting burned by a dead phone battery?

Started carrying one after my old phone bricked during a trip and I couldn't get my boarding pass or hotel confirmation. That was the push I needed. Now I keep the key on my actual keychain with my car keys, so it's always with me even if my phone dies or gets left in a cab. The only thing I had to get used to was remembering to actually plug it in when I'm tired, but once you build that habit it's automatic. Feels way more solid than hoping my battery holds out.
