Update: the IT guy at my office said password managers are a waste, and I pushed back
Last Tuesday I was at the office in Tucson grabbing coffee, and our new IT guy Marcus saw the little sticky note I keep under my keyboard. Before you judge me, it is not my real password, it is a fake one I write down to mess with people. Marcus went off for like 10 minutes about how password managers are overkill and how he just memorizes 40 different passwords with a pattern. I asked him what happens when one site gets hacked and he needs to change all 40, and he just shrugged and said he would figure it out. That is exactly the problem I keep running into with this mindset. Reusing a pattern across every login is how one breach at some random site turns into your email, your bank, and your work all getting hit at once. I set up a manager for my parents after their Facebook got hijacked in 2022, and neither of them has been locked out since, and my mom is 68 and barely uses her phone. So am I wrong here, or is the memorize-a-pattern thing just asking for trouble?
