Friends think my daily fiction time is a waste, but it helps me unwind.
Am I wrong to ignore the news for novels every day?

Totally get that! I do the same thing with history podcasts instead of the morning news. Some people just don't get how important that quiet time is.

Back in 2022, I started with the Hardcore History podcast on World War I. It's not just skipping the news, but how stories from the past make current problems feel temporary. Hearing about whole societies changing over decades puts my bad day at work into a bigger picture. That long view is what keeps me from getting overwhelmed by every little crisis on social media. Morning quiet time with history sets a calm tone that lasts all day, unlike the jumpy feeling from news breaks.

Hey, just a small thing, but Hardcore History's WWI series actually came out way back in 2014.

Look, my neighbor missed the tornado warnings last week because he was binging some fantasy series. There's a middle ground between doomscrolling and checking out completely. My local paper takes five minutes and tells me if the roads are flooded or if there's a boil water notice. Ignoring everything real for made up stories seems like you're just building a nicer bubble.
