I finally snapped at my neighbor over the parking spot thing

I live in a small complex near Portland with only 8 spaces for 10 units. For the last 3 months, the guy in 2B has been taking the spot closest to the stairs even though his assigned spot is around back. I tried talking to him twice but he just shrugged. Last Tuesday I came home with a full trunk of groceries and had to park three blocks away in the rain. I left a note on his windshield that was maybe too direct. Now I'm wondering if I should apologize or just start parking in his spot when he's gone. Anyone else dealt with a parking feud that got personal?

What nobody's bringing up is maybe that spot isn't actually assigned to anyone specific and your landlord set it up wrong from the start. I'd check your lease again because my buddy had this same fight and it turned out the complex just told everyone different stories about who gets what. If it's not in writing, maybe you and 2B should flip a coin or something and be done with it.

Funny enough I used to be the guy who thought notes were always a bad move but after reading this I'm actually on your side. You tried talking twice and he blew you off, what were you supposed to do just keep lugging groceries in the rain forever? I think that note was probably necessary to draw a line, even if it wasn't polite. The key thing is you gave him a chance to fix it the right way first. How is he acting when you run into him now?

Did you ever try just having a calm sit-down conversation with him face to face, or did you only leave notes? I was in a similar fight with my neighbor over shared driveway space, and the only thing that actually fixed it was catching him outside on a Saturday morning and talking it out like normal people. After that I made sure to wave or say hi every time I saw him, and within a month we were actually on decent terms again.
