My toaster died mid-bagel this morning

I was making my usual Monday breakfast around 7am and the toaster just sparked and stopped working halfway through a sesame bagel. Didn't even pop up. I ended up using the oven broiler for the first time in 10 years and it actually worked fine. Has anyone else had a small appliance die at the worst moment and found a weird backup method that stuck?

My old toaster gave out on a Sunday morning last year when I had a crowd over for brunch and needed 12 bagels done in waves. I grabbed a cast iron skillet and did them on the stovetop, flipping each one twice, and honestly they came out way crispier than my toaster ever managed. I still use that skillet method on weekends even though I bought a replacement toaster. Did your oven broiler bagel come out with that perfect crunchy outside and soft middle, or did it end up more like a toast situation?

@milam48 I always thought the skillet thing was just showing off, but you might have just changed my mind. I tried the broiler method once and it came out more like a bread crouton than a bagel, hard all the way through. Your description of flipping twice in the cast iron sounds like it gives you that control to nail the crust without burning the middle. The way you talk about that crunchy outside and soft inside is exactly what I'm after, my toaster just gives me a sad, even brown all over. Now I'm wondering if I've been missing out on better bagels all this time just because I stuck with the appliance. Might have to dig out my old skillet this weekend and see if I can get those results you're talking about.

Respectfully, I see this totally different. A toaster gives me that consistent all-over crunch that I actually prefer, while a skillet always leaves one side softer no matter how much I flip. Have you ever tried putting your bagel in the toaster twice on a lower setting to get the texture you want without burning it?
