Picking how to react when a coworker told a cringe story at lunch
We were all eating when my coworker started sharing a super awkward personal story. I had to decide if I should laugh, change the subject, or just sit there. I quickly asked a related but safe question to steer the chat away. It worked and saved everyone from more discomfort. Now I keep a neutral question ready for when convos get too real.

In our office kitchen last month, I defused a WEIRD story by asking about the new coffee maker.

Actually leaning into the awkwardness works better sometimes. Asking a safe question just makes the whole moment feel fake and tense. If someone is sharing something real, even if it's cringe, brushing past it tells them their story isn't welcome. A genuine laugh or a simple "that's rough" can make the person feel seen and break the ice for real. Trying to control every social moment with a scripted question makes conversations feel dead.

Asking a safe question to steer the chat away is exactly what I do. When things get awkward, I pivot to something boring like the weather or a project deadline. It works because it's neutral and doesn't make anyone uncomfortable.

Project deadlines as a safe topic? That's not neutral at all. People get stressed about work stuff. Bringing it up in an awkward chat makes it worse. Now everyone's thinking about their own deadlines. Weather talk is dull but harmless. Deadlines can turn a weird moment into a tense one.
