PSA: My dad told me to never ignore a slow drain and I paid $350 to learn why
He said a slow kitchen sink means gunk is building up in the pipe, not just a little clog. I thought he was overreacting until last month when the pipe burst behind the wall and flooded my cabinets. Has anyone else had a small warning sign turn into a big repair bill?

Oh man @william_garcia is spot on, I learned that lesson the hard way too with a nasty backup last fall.

Your dad was right, a slow drain is basically a ticking time bomb in your pipes. The gunk builds up slowly over months until it finally blocks everything and you're stuck with a mess like you had. We had a similar issue with our bathroom sink and now I pour boiling water down it once a week to keep things moving.

That boiling water trick works pretty well until you forget to do it for a couple weeks. I was doing the same thing with our kitchen sink until my wife poured a whole pot of leftover pasta water down there and forgot about the strainer. Now we've got little bits of spaghetti noodle stuck somewhere in the trap and I have to take the pipe apart this weekend. Guess I'll be learning how to use a plumbing snake pretty soon.
