PSA: my neighbor's cat got stuck in my rain barrel in Seattle last Tuesday
I heard the meowing at 6 AM and had to carefully tip the whole thing over to get him out, which was a mess. Anyone have a better way to secure these things from curious animals?

I mean, "carefully tip the whole thing over" sounds like the start of a cartoon. Hope the cat at least said thank you before shaking off all that water on your porch. Maybe just put a lid on it, a heavy one, before the raccoons decide it's their new swimming pool.

Is it really that big of a deal though? It's just a tipped over water bowl, not a home invasion.

Wait, what if the cat's trying to tell you it's thirsty?

Last Tuesday I had to get my neighbor's terrier out from under my deck so I feel your pain. I wrapped some chicken wire over the opening of the rain barrel and weighed it down with a brick, and it keeps everything out. Just make sure the wire is tight enough so a cat can't squeeze through the gaps.
