Showerthought: How my morning coffee routine changed in 6 months without me noticing
I used to just grab a gas station cup on the way to work, black coffee, no sugar, done in 2 minutes. But after my wife bought me a cheap pour-over setup last January, something shifted. Now I spend like 15 minutes every morning grinding beans, boiling water to the right temp, and watching it drip. I didn't plan this, it just kind of happened slowly. The funny thing is I actually look forward to that quiet time now, even though I'm waking up earlier. Has anyone else had a tiny daily habit completely morph on them like that over a few months?

Hold on, let me get this straight. You are now spending 15 extra minutes every morning just to watch coffee drip through paper. That is a lot of time, especially if you add it up over a month or a year. I get that it feels nice and mindful and all that, but are you really sure it is not just a different form of busywork you tricked yourself into. Before you were out the door, now you are standing in the kitchen playing chemist with hot water. Seems like a lot of fuss for the same caffeine hit.

Ngl @robin591, you saying "playing chemist with hot water" really hits the nail on the head because honestly that's basically what it is. And maybe that's the whole point, turning a chore into a little experiment that forces you to slow down for a sec before the day goes nuts.

I read somewhere that coffee nerds actually measure water temp and timing and all that stuff. It makes sense when you think about it - good coffee is like 90% about getting the water right. I used to just nuke my mug of water in the microwave and dump pre-ground Folgers in there. Now I heat my water to exactly 200 degrees and pour it slow over fresh grounds. Takes about 5 minutes more than the old way but the difference is night and day. The chemists have a point about the temp thing at least.
