The real cost of making coffee at home versus buying it shocked me
I did the math on my morning coffee habit after reading a post in a money forum last week. I spend about $2.50 a day on beans and milk for my French press, which comes to $912 a year. But a cafe latte near my office in Portland runs $5.50, so that is over $2,000 annually. Am I the only one surprised that saving a few bucks a day actually adds up to over a thousand dollars difference?

Two thousand dollars a year on coffee? That's insane. I would've guessed maybe half that at most.

Figure in the cost of all the gas and electricity used to brew that coffee at home too. A coffee maker pulls a lot of power over a year if you're running it every single day, and that's before you factor in the water and the grinder if you're buying beans. Plus think about all the plastic K-cups or paper filters that end up in the trash, that stuff adds up quicker than people realize. So two grand probably accounts for more than just the coffee itself once you tally up all the hidden costs.
