Three weeks ago at the Lowe's on 4th street changed how I handle customer returns.

I watched a guy argue for 15 minutes over a $12 cracked tile he dropped himself. The cashier just folded and gave him a refund. That moment made me realize my own policy of always taking things back is actually making people less careful. Has anyone else had to stop being nice to customers just to keep your inventory straight?

That part about the guy arguing 15 minutes over a cracked tile he dropped himself really hit home. I had a similar thing happen with a bag of mulch that a guy clearly left in his truck for a month and then tried to return because it was "defective." We gave in just to get him out of the store. It makes you wonder if being too lenient just encourages people to try their luck every time they mess up.

Managers always fold like cheap suits just to avoid the hassle. That's exactly why these people keep coming back with their nonsense, they know you'll cave eventually. Short term peace for long term headaches, every single time.
