Yesterday at the store, I watched a mom take formula and did nothing

I was just getting groceries last night when I saw a woman slip a can of baby formula into her bag without paying. My immediate urge was to tell someone, but she had this worn-out look that stopped me. It's wrong to steal, sure, but what if she couldn't afford it? Baby stuff is so expensive now, and I've heard stories about parents struggling. I ended up staring at my cart like I was super interested in cereal boxes. Walking away, I realized that not every choice has a clear right answer, and that bugs me more than I expected.

Watched my friend have the same thing happen at a dollar store last year. A young mom was quietly opening a box of diapers and taking out just a few, leaving the rest. My friend just pretended to look at keychains. She said the guilt of maybe stopping her and the guilt of not stopping her felt exactly the same. Never figured out the right call.

Saw a guy at a gas station once short like two bucks for his tank, and the clerk just waved him through. Those moments stick with you.

Man, that diaper story hits different. It's one thing to cover a couple bucks for gas, but that's a whole other level of quiet desperation. Those are the moments where the "right" thing feels totally out of reach, you know? Makes you just hope for a softer world where nobody has to make choices like that.

Honestly, I see it the opposite way. That mom was stealing, plain and simple, and letting it go isn't kindness, it's just enabling. We need a world where people get real help, not one where we ignore the rules.
