Been layering my compost wrong for 12 years until a neighbor saw my pile and laughed

He pointed out I was putting greens on top of browns instead of mixing them in, and now my pile actually breaks down instead of just sitting there stinking - has anyone else had a simple gardening habit that turned out to be backwards?
