Came across this stat that says 70% of gym memberships go unused and I keep going back and forth on it
I was reading a report from the health club association while updating my client intake forms last night. It says something like 67% of people who sign up for a gym stop going within 3 months but still pay for a full year. On one hand I think well that's their money and their choice to waste it. But then I also wonder if gyms are kind of selling a dream that most people just can't keep up with. Where's the line between personal responsibility and the industry pushing unrealistic expectations?

Sounds like they're paying for guilt instead of gains.

The 67% stat actually comes from a research firm looking at new year sign ups specifically, not the whole industry average. Most gyms I've seen operate more around a 50-60% retention rate for the first year. But you're right that the pricing model basically banks on people not showing up. Gyms make way more money off the people who pay and never walk through the door than the regulars who actually use the equipment. The whole industry is built around that gap between what people hope they'll do and what they actually end up doing.
