I ate crow about that $8 composting bin from the hardware store
My neighbor in Tacoma kept going on about how her cheap plastic bin broke down scraps faster than my fancy tumbler. I figured she was just lucky or something. After 6 weeks of her bin being dryer and less smelly, I finally looked inside and the worms had basically done everything. Now I'm trying the same setup with shredded paper and I gotta ask, has anyone else found the low tech version works better than the expensive gadget?

The damp but not wet thing is exactly what I had to figure out the hard way. My first attempt was more like a swamp and yeah, the smell was something else. @davis.noah nailed it with that, it really is the whole trick once you get it dialed in. I'm right there with you on the cheap bin thing too, my fancy tumbler just sits there now while the $8 one does all the work. Takes a while to admit you spent more for less, but the results don't lie.
