I'll take a folding knife over a fixed blade for camping any day
Everybody acts like a fixed blade is the only real choice for outdoor stuff, but I've been using a good folding knife on trips up in the White Mountains for the last three summers and I haven't missed a fixed blade once. The thing that changed my mind was how much lighter my pack felt when I stopped carrying that heavy sheath knife around. Plus I can clip the folder to my pocket and never have to mess with a belt or a sheath when I'm setting up camp. Last week I split a bunch of kindling with my folding knife and it held up fine, didn't even need to stop and sharpen it. People say folders break or jam up, but I've been using the same one for 14 months now and it's still solid. Is there something I'm missing about why fixed blades are supposed to be so much better, or is it just tradition?

14 months is nothing, wait til year three when the pivot gets gritty.

Preach. I was still riding that initial hype high at 14 months, telling myself all the slow parts were just "building momentum." Then year three hit and oh man, the real work started. I had to fire my first real hire, my original product line was basically dead, and I was reworking my whole business model from scratch while trying to keep existing customers happy. It's like the training wheels come off and you finally see all the cracks you were ignoring.
