Rant: That "plumber's snake" I rented snapped inside my drain

Was clearing a clog in my kitchen sink in Denver last Saturday, put too much torque on the rental snake and the cable broke off inside the pipe. Had to call a pro who charged me $350 to fish out the broken piece and clear the drain anyway, has anyone else had a rental tool make things worse?

Are you sure that 350 is really that wild though? I mean yeah it stings but plumbers in Denver are charging a lot right now especially on a weekend. Idk maybe it's just me but if a snake snaps you gotta weigh the cost of you trying to fix it versus just getting someone who knows what they're doing. That broken piece could've wedged itself in there good and you probably saved yourself a bigger headache. Plus think about it, you were already frustrated and making it worse, so sometimes paying someone is the smarter move even if it sucks.

Bought a cheap drain snake from a hardware store, broke it on the first twist, and then had to spend an hour picking rusty wire pieces out of the pipe. Learned my lesson to just rent the heavy duty one from a real tool rental place even if it costs more.

Wait, most rental places actually include the wire with the snake...
