Rant: That UPS store clerk who watched me ship a $300 package without insurance

Last Tuesday I mailed a vintage camera to a buyer through the UPS store on Main Street. The clerk rang me up, took my money, and handed me the receipt. Never once asked if I wanted insurance or told me about their declared value limit. Package got lost in transit. Store manager says they aren't liable and it's my fault for not asking. I checked online - the clerk is supposed to offer insurance on anything over $100. I'm out $300 and learned the hard way to always ask before handing over a package. Has anyone else dealt with this at UPS or FedEx?

My wife had the exact same thing happen at a FedEx in Portland last year with a $250 antique clock. It is a bigger pattern I see everywhere now. Nobody takes responsibility for the basics anymore. The clerk should have offered insurance, the store manager should back you up, but instead they just point fingers and say you should have known. It is like there is a quiet trick in so many transactions now. The person handling your package has all the info and the responsibility, but they shift it onto you the moment something goes wrong. That is the part that bothers me most about this whole situation.

The last time I had a package get wrecked, I went straight to the credit card company and filed a dispute. They reversed the charge in like 3 days. The shipping company hates that because it forces them to deal with the merchant instead of dodging you. Also, I always take a photo of the package being handed over now, especially if it looks fragile. Saved me twice when they tried to say I dropped it after delivery.

Always ask for a receipt with declared value and watch them scan it.
