The library laminate counter in Fresno that outlived my car's warranty

I was checking out books at the Fresno central branch yesterday and noticed the same cracked laminate counter from when I was in middle school, but my 2014 Civic just hit 110,000 miles and needed a new transmission, so why do we design stuff that lasts forever in public spaces but falls apart in our driveways, has anyone else noticed this weird divide?

That 2014 Civic transmission thing hits close to home. My buddy's 2015 went at 96k and the shop quoted him $4,800, meanwhile the water fountain at my kid's school has been running since 1998. I think the trick is to treat your car like the library treats that counter: check the fluid every 30k miles, don't ignore weird noises, and fix small cracks before they become big ones. Have you gotten a second quote on the transmission yet?
