Tried free yoga videos on YouTube vs. paying $100 a month for a studio... the result surprised me

I spent 6 weeks doing Yoga with Adriene in my living room and thought I was getting a solid stretch. Then a friend dragged me to a heated studio class in Austin and I realized I'd been holding every pose wrong. Anyone else find that in-person feedback made a bigger difference than they expected?

Oh man, the down dog thing got me too. I spent months practicing at home thinking my wrists just hated yoga. Then an instructor in Dallas literally put her hands on my shoulders and tilted them back and told me to stop dumping all my weight forward. That one cue fixed like 80% of my wrist pain overnight. It's crazy how you can watch a video a hundred times and still never catch those tiny alignment things until someone physically adjusts you. I feel like screen-based yoga tricks you into thinking you're doing it right when you're really just getting good at looking like the video without actually engaging the right muscles.

My aunt had been teaching yoga for 12 years before she told me the real secret about alignment cues. She said most people who teach online are reading off a script and not actually watching your body move. I went to a workshop in Austin last spring and the instructor had us pair up and literally trace each others skeleton with our fingers while in poses. That physical experience of finding your own sit bones and scapula changed how I feel every single pose. Have you tried anything like that where you actually have to map your own body instead of just copying a shape?

Heated classes are a whole different animal, fair warning. But your main point is dead on about the feedback thing. Adriene is great for basics, but you can't know if your hips are square or your shoulders are set right without someone looking. I had the same rude awakening with down dog - thought I had it dialed, then a teacher told me my hands were sliding and I needed to actually press through my knuckles. That one tweak changed everything in my wrists and shoulders. Small corrections you just can't get from a screen.
