Finally organized the junk drawer in my kitchen after putting it off for months

I started sorting through it around 9am this morning in my apartment near Portland and by noon I had three neat little trays from the dollar store holding all my takeout menus, twist ties, and random batteries. I mean, it's just a drawer but I actually found three old gift cards with like $12 total still on them, so that felt pretty nice. Does anyone else have that one drawer that just turns into a black hole over time?

Three hours on a junk drawer sounds like overkill to me.

Honestly, have you ever actually tried to organize a junk drawer properly? I read somewhere that the average household has like three to five of these disaster zones hidden around the house. Three hours sounds about right when you start pulling everything out, sorting through old batteries, broken pens, and random keys that might go to something important. Tbh, if you do it right, you're not just throwing stuff back in, you're finding a home for each thing so it actually stays neat for more than a week. Ngl I'd rather spend three hours doing that than digging through a hot mess every time I need a screwdriver.

My junk drawer was so bad last month that I found a flip phone from 2007 buried under a stack of takeout menus. I set a timer for three hours and barely made it through sorting out the expired coupons and orphaned screws. By the end, I had a neat little system with a divider for batteries and a mini tray for spare change. Then I closed the drawer, turned around, and realized the hall closet is a worse disaster zone. So I guess I'll have to schedule another three-hour block this weekend to face that beast.
