Just realized my cheap compost thermometer was lying to me all summer

I kept wondering why my bin in the backyard wasn't breaking down stuff like it should. Turns out the $8 thermometer I bought from a hardware store in Spokane was reading 30 degrees low the whole time. Tossed it and got a basic one from a garden supply place for $15 and now the pile is actually cooking at 140 degrees like it should. Anyone else have a tool that just flat out failed you without you knowing?

Man, that's a brutal discovery, I'd be pretty ticked off finding out my gear was useless like that.

Twenty bucks says that gear is now a permanent wall decoration or a very angry paperweight. At least you know the seller probably paid full price too which is some nice schadenfreude.
