My grandpa's 1987 advice about tools finally clicked today

He always said buy the cheap one first, and if you break it, you earned the nice one. I ignored that for years and blew $180 on a drill I barely use twice a month. Today I snapped a $12 putty knife on a window frame in Philly, then got the expensive one and it felt earned. Anyone else got family advice that took a decade to make sense?

Philly putty knives snap no matter the price, it's the frame's fault.
