My neighbor Bob told me to just yank the lawnmower cord harder and it snapped clean off

Bob's been cutting grass since like the 80s so I figured he knew what he was talking about. Gave it a good hard pull and the whole cord came flying out in my hand, recoil spring went twanging somewhere under the deck. Took me 45 minutes to fish it out and rewind the spring, but hey at least now I know how a lawnmower actually works. Anyone else got bad advice from a well-meaning neighbor?

omg I feel your pain so hard, Bob's been giving me bad advice for years too. Last summer he told me to just pour a little gas down the carburetor to "prime" a stubborn engine and I ended up with a face full of flames and a melted air filter lol. But honestly, there's something kinda beautiful about learning the hard way, now I can fix a recoil spring blindfolded and you probably can too. At least Bob means well even if his methods are straight out of 1987.

Nothing like a toasted air filter to separate the real mechanics from the keyboard warriors, huh @seth_singh20?

Used to roll my eyes at Bob, but you got me rethinking that.
