Shoutout to the guy at Ace Hardware who talked me out of a 12-foot ladder
I was standing there for 20 minutes trying to decide between a 6-foot step ladder and a 12-foot extension ladder for cleaning my gutters. The old employee came over and asked what I was doing, told me the big one would just be a hassle for a one-story house. Picked the 6-footer for $48 and had the gutters done in under an hour with no wobbling. Has anyone else had a hardware store employee save them from overbuying?

That's a solid employee right there. Half the time they just wanna upsell you on the biggest thing they got. Good on him for being straight with you.

Hang on though @murphy.aaron maybe that guy just didn't want to push a sale on something that would be a waste. If the customer really needed the cheaper fix and he sold them the expensive upgrade instead, they'd be back in a month complaining and asking for a refund or a chargeback. That kind of honesty builds trust over time, even if it costs him one commission today. Plus word of mouth from a happy customer who saved money is worth way more than a quick buck from someone who leaves feeling ripped off.
