Signed up for a 5 mile fun run on a whim this morning and actually finished without walking

I never run. Like at all. My buddy texted me last night saying his sister dropped out of this local run near Piedmont Park and asked if I wanted her spot. I figured why not, worst case I'd just jog slow and walk the rest. But something clicked around mile 2 where I just kept going. Finished at 47 minutes which I know is slow but I'm honestly shocked I did it. Has anyone else signed up for something last minute and surprised themselves?

47 minutes isn't slow, it's "I didn't die and the paramedics didn't have to scrape me off the pavement" pace which is a win in my book. Did that same thing a few years ago with a 10k, showed up hungover in borrowed shoes, finished in 58 minutes and couldn't walk right for three days. Now every time I see a race signup I have to fight the urge to do something stupid again.

Ha! I read somewhere that 90% of people who sign up for races on a whim actually finish slower than they expect but feel way better about it. Sounds like you hit that sweet spot. Now you're one of us, the "I guess I do running now" crowd.

Damn, that's wild. Honestly changed my whole view on last minute stuff.
