Tried a cheap fly rod for 3 months and caught more fish than my expensive one
Picked up a $40 rod at a garage sale back in April. Figured it would snap or just be junk. Used it every weekend at the creek near my house. Turns out the lighter action worked better for the small trout I was after. Never expected a beat up old rod to outfish my brand new one. Anybody else have gear that surprised you?

Blew my mind reading that a garage sale rod actually out fished a brand new one. That lighter action probably let you feel the bite way better than the stiff expensive rod could. Guess sometimes the cheap stuff just works right for the situation.

Did you catch that article a few months back where some guy tested a bunch of old rods from thrift stores against new ones? It was wild, he found that a beat up fiberglass rod from the 70s actually let him feel the bottom structure way better than a modern graphite stick. I've heard people say the old rods have a slower bend that works great for smaller baits and light line. Your mileage may vary, but it makes sense to me that a garage sale find could have a personality that just clicks with how you fish. Sometimes the fancy stuff just overcomplicates things when all you need is to feel that bump.

That old fiberglass rod actually letting you feel the bottom structure better than a new graphite one is crazy to me. Did you try it yourself or just read about it?
