My neighbor casually told me I was watering my plants wrong for 2 years

She saw me dumping water right on the leaves and said the roots need it directly or it just evaporates. I tried her method for a week and my basil actually looks green and full now instead of sad and yellow. Anyone else ever get called out on something simple like this and realize you've been doing it backward the whole time?

Honestly I used to think watering the leaves was just as good but now I get why that doesn't work. The water just sits there and doesn't actually help the plant get nutrients from the soil. Your basil looking better proves she was right, sometimes the simplest change makes the biggest difference.

Second guy is right that leaves don't do much, but water doesn't really sit there and cause problems with nutrients either. It's more that the roots just can't take it in through the leaves so the plant stays thirsty. Your basil bounced back because the soil is finally getting the water it needed.

Pfft, it's just watering plants @allen_kai, not rocket science.
