My neighbor's dying camellia bush made me a plant person today

I was unloading laminate planks Tuesday morning when I saw Mrs. Hendricks from two doors down trying to dig up this sad, brown camellia in her front yard here in Portland. She told me it had been in her family for 40 years and she was giving up on it, so I spent my lunch break researching soil pH and ended up pruning half the dead branches and adding some coffee grounds to the dirt. Anyone else ever get pulled into fixing something random that wasn't your job at all, and did it actually work out or make things worse?

Tried reviving a neighbor's dying fern with miracle grow and shade. It came back strong.
