My water heater quit on a Sunday morning and the plumber's quote went from $400 to $1,100 in one phone call
Woke up last Sunday around 6am to a cold shower and a small puddle in the garage, and I knew right away the 12 year old water heater was done. Called the first plumber I found and he quoted me $400 over the phone just to come out and look at it, which already felt steep. He shows up two hours late, pokes around for 15 minutes, and suddenly it's $1,100 because the venting is "not to code" and he has to add a pan and a new shutoff valve. I told him I would get a second opinion and he got pretty short with me about it. Ended up finding a guy through my neighbor who did the whole swap for $650 with the permit included. Has anyone else had a contractor double the price between the phone call and the actual visit, and did you just eat it or walk away?
Man, that price jump is wild, the venting must have been made of solid gold too. Classic move, quote low to get the truck out there then hit you with the "oh by the way" once you're stuck with cold water. Good on you for telling him no thanks and walking, some of these guys count on people panicking and just paying up. $650 with the permit is a solid deal, your neighbor's guy sounds like a keeper. That first plumber getting short with you says everything you need to know about him.
