Paid $85 for a used chest freezer off a porch in Akron and it just saved my whole garden
Saw a listing for a chest freezer on a porch in Akron for $85 and figured for that price it would either die in a week or change my life. It hummed along fine for two months, and then my tomato crop came in all at once, way more than I could eat or give away. I blanched and froze 40 pounds of tomatoes in there instead of watching half of them rot on the counter like the summer before. The seal is a little rough and I have to slam the lid, but for $85 I'll take it. Now I'm wondering if I should grab a second one for peppers or if that's just hoarding, how do you all decide when enough freezer space is enough?
Grew up with a deep freezer in the garage that my mom packed so full you had to dig through frozen green beans to find anything. One summer she bought a half cow from a farmer and we ate chili and pot roast until I moved out. That thing outlived three refrigerators, no joke. Anyway, 40 pounds of tomatoes is nothing, if you've got pepper space left I say fill it before the first frost gets them.
