The stray cat that picked my porch over three fancier houses

A scruffy orange tabby showed up on my porch Tuesday morning and just plopped down like he owned the place. I put out a bowl of water and some tuna, and he stayed for five hours, even through a thunderstorm. Turns out my neighbor two doors down feeds three cats and has a fancy heated shelter, but this one chose my cracked welcome mat instead. He came back again today at the same time, so I guess I'm a cat person now. Has anyone else had an animal just decide to adopt them out of nowhere?

That's the thing about animals, they don't care about the fancy stuff we humans get hung up on. The heated shelter and the three bowls of food sound great on paper, but that cat wanted something simpler, maybe a quiet spot where nobody's hovering. It's like how people will drive past a brand new coffee shop to sit at the old diner with the cracked vinyl booths, you know? We all crave that feeling of just being accepted for who we are, not for what kind of setup we provide. Your welcome mat probably felt honest to him, no pressure, no cat condo with a view. So yeah, you're a cat person now, but really you're just a person who got picked for being real, and that's a pretty good thing to be picked for.
