TIL replacing a toilet flapper should take 5 minutes but took me 2 hours

Went to fix the running toilet in my apartment on Elm Street. Found the old flapper was rotted and figured easy swap. Turns out the universal kit I bought didn't fit my weird Kohler model, so I had to drive to two different hardware stores just to find the right one. Has anyone else had a simple home repair turn into a whole afternoon mission?

Wait, are you saying the universal kit didn't fit because the store was out of stock or because you didn't check beforehand? I've done that exact same thing with a Moen kitchen faucet cartridge, and honestly the drive to the store was my own fault for not looking up the model number first. Universal kits are a scam if you ask me, they only work on like 3 specific brands and everything else is different. That said, I bet the second trip was way faster since you knew exactly what you needed. Sometimes the frustration makes you forget that actually getting the right part the first time would have saved you 90 minutes.

Tbh universal kits are just a gimmick. They barely work on anything.
