Took me 3 hours to change a single light fixture today

Old fixture had some weird mounting plate that didn't match the new one. Plus the previous owner painted over everything including the screws. Should have been a 20 minute swap. Had to make two trips to the hardware store. Anyone else run into a simple home repair that just snowballed on you?

Bruh the painted over screws are the worst. I spent 4 hours on a ceiling fan swap once because they painted the bracket to the junction box. Ended up just ripping the whole thing down and patching the drywall. Hardware store runs are inevitable too, went three times for the same outlet swap.

Third trip to the hardware store for the same outlet swap is brutal. But tell me this - did you finally have to drill out the screws or did you just give up and use a flathead on a stripped phillips? I had a similar nightmare last month with a dimmer switch in a 1950s house, the previous owner had painted over the plate AND the switch toggle, took me an hour just to get the thing off without breaking the drywall. What kind of fan bracket was it, one of those old round ones or the newer kind with the tabs?

Old round bracket with the screws painted over. Hammer and flathead did the trick.
