Wasted $80 on a premium air filter that made my furnace louder

I bought a fancy MERV 13 filter online last week and it choked my airflow so bad the blower rattled like a dying fridge, anyone else fall for the high grade filter trap?

Hold on, I gotta disagree a little here. A MERV 13 is definitely not right for every system especially older ones with smaller motors, but it's not a scam. That filter is made for people like me with allergies and pets. My furnace handles it fine because I checked the manual first and it recommends that grade. Sounds like your blower can't handle the extra drag which means your system was probably already struggling. That high restriction just made an existing problem obvious.

Guessing people just assume price equals better without reading what their system can actually handle, same thing happens with phone chargers and car parts all the time.

See it all the time with phone cases too. People buy the most expensive one thinking it's the best protection without checking if their phone even fits right or if the case blocks the ports. Same with tires for cars, folks go for the priciest brand without looking at what their driving conditions actually need. The whole "expensive = better" thing just skips the part where you gotta match the product to your specific setup. Your blower might be fine with a cheaper filter that lets it breathe, and that's not a knock on you, that's just how systems are designed.
