I spent 6 months stirring my coffee the wrong way until a barista called me out
So I've been making my own coffee at home for like half a year now, using this fancy Chemex pour over setup I got. Every morning I'd stir the grounds with a wooden chopstick in a clockwise circle, thinking I was being all precise and fancy. Last week I was at a local shop, Brew Haus on 3rd street, and the barista saw me stirring my cup the same way. She leaned over and goes "uh, you know stirring clockwise actually pushes the grounds to the side and causes uneven extraction right? You gotta go back and forth in a zigzag." My mind was absolutely blown. I went home and tried her method and my coffee tastes completely different now, way less bitter. Has anyone else had one of those moments where you realize you've been doing something super basic totally wrong for months?

Haha, wow. So you've been sabotaging your own coffee for six months and just now figured it out? That's rough. I mean, I've been putting my toothpaste on the brush sideways for like 30 years and nobody's ever said anything, but I guess coffee is serious business. At least you got a free lesson and better tasting coffee out of it. I'd say that's a win, even if it took half a year.

Read an article from Serious Eats a while back that tested different stir methods and they found the zigzag actually makes a measurable difference in extraction. They used a refractometer and everything, not just taste. Funny how the little details like stirring pattern can throw off your brew for months without you realizing it. Glad you caught it eventually.
