My kettle died mid-boil and I tried to revive it with a chopstick

This morning I went to make tea and my electric kettle just stopped working halfway through boiling. No sound, no light, nothing. I waited a few minutes, tried plugging it into a different outlet in my kitchen, still dead. So I grabbed a chopstick from the drawer and started poking around the bottom where the heating element connects. I figured maybe some gunk was blocking the contact or something. After jabbing at it for a solid 5 minutes, I actually heard a click and the thing turned back on. No idea if I fixed it or just got lucky, but it boiled water fine after that. Has anyone else resurrected an appliance with weird methods like that before?

I read somewhere the thermal fuse works like a reset button on kettles.

Remember that most kettles actually have a bimetallic strip in the base that does the heavy lifting, not a thermal fuse like a cheap hairdryer would use. @lilyp37 you're close but the reset button is really just a physical latch that pops when the strip bends from heat, not an actual fuse that blows out permanently. Thing is, if it was a real fuse you'd be digging for a replacement every time you boiled it dry, so they use that mechanical switch setup to be more user friendly.
