The 10,000 hour rule has a footnote nobody mentions

Read a study last Tuesday that said deliberate practice only accounts for about 12% of skill difference in most fields, not the 100% that book made it seem. Has anyone else looked into this and felt like they wasted a bunch of time grinding the wrong way?

That "only accounts for 12%" thing sounds like one of those studies that gets picked apart depending on how you measure things. I bet if you look at the fine print, they counted everyone from chess players to office workers, so of course the average is low. Still, nobody becomes a concert pianist by just messing around when they feel like it, so the rule is more of a rough guide than a scientific law. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, just keep practicing the way that makes sense for what you want to do.
