Went to the Grand Canyon last weekend and noticed the sound weirdness

I was standing at Mather Point and realized the echo off the canyon walls was super delayed compared to normal places. Like I'd yell and it took a solid 3 seconds to bounce back. My friend said it's because the opposite rim is over a mile away so sound takes that long to travel. Has anyone else noticed weird acoustics in big open spaces like that?
