I finally talked to my uncle about his woodworking hobby and it hit different
He was a factory manager for 30 years and always seemed like he just did spreadsheets all day. Over coffee last Saturday he told me he spends 4 hours every night in his shed building custom birdhouses. He said 'work pays the bills but this is what keeps me breathing.' Now I'm thinking about what my version of that is.

That line 'this is what keeps me breathing' really stuck with me too. My neighbor is a retired dentist and I always thought he just watched TV all day but last week I saw him in his garage at 2am welding a giant metal dinosaur sculpture. Turns out he's been doing it for 15 years and has like 30 of them in his backyard. His wife said he comes inside covered in sparks and grinning like a kid. It makes me wonder how many people around us have whole secret lives they only live after dark.

covered in sparks and grinning like a kid" is such a perfect image. Makes you wonder if that's the real him and the dentist stuff was just the day job.

@the_thea I hear you but honestly those "secret lives" are just another way of Running from the real one.
