I thought my day job was just a paycheck until I watched a guy fix a bike brake at a Tuesday night ride in Denver
I always figured my job at a call center was just the thing that paid for my real life, which is riding and fixing up old bikes. Last month I went to this Tuesday night ride in Denver and a guy's rear brake cable snapped about 4 miles in. Everyone pulled over and this older dude named Marcus just sat on the curb and walked him through swapping it with a spare he had in his bag. It took maybe 15 minutes and nobody complained. I stood there holding my phone and thought about how I spend 8 hours a day reading scripts to angry people and how fast I clock out. Marcus asked what I did and when I told him he said his daughter does the same work and that it is way harder than people think. That got me weirdly proud of something I usually hide. I signed up for a weekend brake class at a shop on Broadway last week and now I have a reason to actually pay attention at work, just to fund the tools. Anyone else got a day job that turned out to matter more than they expected once they looked at it different?
