My boss told me my wiring was 'too pretty' and it actually made me a faster worker
He said I spent way too much time making the inside of control panels look like art, so I switched to zip ties instead of lacing cord and now I finish jobs in like half the time but man do they look ugly, has anyone else had someone tell them to stop caring so much about appearance?

Oh man, that hits hard. I totally get feeling proud of your work and then having someone basically tell you it's wasted time. It's rough when you pour effort into something that looks good but nobody else cares about it. I've been in that spot before where I had to choose between satisfaction and speed, and it stings a little even when the practical choice is obvious. Your panels might feel ugly now but at least you're getting through jobs faster and not getting complaints anymore. That trade off is real and honestly it's hard to tell if the boss is right or just being a stick in the mud.

Tbh my boss would probably fire me if he saw my panel work. I'm the type who color coordinates everything and spends an hour making sure the wires curve exactly right, then I step back and admire it like it's a painting. Ngl switching to zip ties sounds smart though, even if it hurts your soul a little. Guess it's better than being the slow guy with the pretty panels who gets side-eyed at team meetings.

Honestly, there's a middle ground nobody talks about. I worked with a guy who used those reusable fabric velcro straps instead of zip ties or plastic ones. He could pull them tight for a clean look but still adjust stuff later without cutting anything. Ngl it was a game changer for speed and aesthetics. Plus your boss sees you working clean but not slow, which is the real trick here.
