My manager's 'just ship it' advice wrecked my passion project

My boss at the call center told me to stop perfecting my painting side gig and just post it online. I spent 6 weeks on this one piece, kept tweaking the shadows. Posted it half-finished on a Tuesday night. Got 40 likes and one comment asking if it was a dog. My manager was dead wrong for my art, but right for my paycheck. Now I split time: rough drafts for money, slow work for me. Has anyone else had a boss push speed over quality and regret listening?

The "just ship it" thing is such a trap for creative work... my old boss used to say the same thing about my reports, and I'd rush them out just to get called out for mistakes later. I finally learned to keep two versions of everything, quick and dirty for them, and the slow careful one for me. That dog comment would've killed me too, but honestly, splitting the time is the only way I stay sane.
