Pro tip: don't plan a backyard project during a week of rain in Seattle

Last March I had three days off to build a raised garden bed, and it poured every single day from Monday to Thursday. The soil turned into mud, I couldn't get the lumber cut right, and by Friday I had a half-built soggy mess sitting in puddles. Has anyone else had a week where the weather just totally ruined your schedule?

Three years ago I booked a whole week off in October to build a deck. Checked the forecast 10 days out. Sunny. Checked again 5 days out. Sunny. Then the morning of day one it starts drizzling and doesn't stop for six days straight. I've noticed this keeps happening with any project that needs dry weather. It's like life has a built-in joke where the universe watches you plan something outdoorsy and just laughs. The worst part is you can't even get mad because it's not personal. But it feels personal. Eventually you learn to build a backup plan into every single project, which honestly sucks because half the fun is the spontaneity.

Did you try checking the hourly forecast instead of just the daily one?

Back in 2019 I booked a long weekend to go camping and kayaking. Checked the forecast every day leading up to it, perfect conditions. Drove three hours to the lake, set up the tent, woke up at 5am to a thunderstorm that lasted the entire trip. Spent the whole time huddled under a tarp playing cards and eating gas station snacks. I still haven't been back to that lake.
