The 3AM library quiet floor rule broke my study flow for good
I used to think absolute silence was the only way to focus. Last semester I camped out on the quiet floor of the main library at Ohio State every night, and the guy two tables over had a cough that echoed off the concrete walls. I wore earplugs, still heard it. After 6 weeks I switched to the loud group study area on the first floor, and somehow the random chatter and keyboard noise made my brain lock in better. Now I only study in cafes or busy lobbies, and my GPA actually went up a full point. Am I the only one who does worse in dead quiet spaces, or does anyone else find low level chaos easier to think in?

The dead quiet floor thing is a total trap for me too. I once tried to study in a silent room and ended up counting the ceiling tiles just to have something to do. But the moment I moved to a busy coffee shop, I wrote three pages of notes and only stopped because my drink got cold. So honestly, your "low level chaos" theory is my whole life now. My brain treats full quiet like a creepy horror movie, I keep waiting for something to jump out.
