Took me 8 months to realize my thermostat was set wrong for winter savings

I kept wondering why my gas bill was $180 a month even when I wasn't home much. Turns out I had my thermostat set to hold at 72 degrees day and night because I never messed with the programming. After a neighbor told me she drops hers to 62 when she's out, I finally looked up how to set the schedule on my unit. It took me like 30 minutes to program it, but that was 8 months of wasted money. Anyone else find out they were doing something dumb with their thermostat for way too long?

Didn't someone post that every degree lower saves like 3% on heating costs?

Wait, $180 a month is bad? Mine's usually around that in winter. Is it really that big a deal?

@the_mary it really depends on where you live and how your place is built... mine was $280 last month and it's a newish house with good insulation. drafts and old windows are what kill you.
