Finally got my inventory tracking under control after 11 months of chaos

I kept losing track of parts for my repair shop and it took me nearly a year to realize a simple barcode scanner at a pawn shop near Hamtramck was the fix. Anyone else have a dumb simple tool that solved a headache you'd been ignoring?

I get what you're saying but a barcode scanner feels like a band-aid on a bigger problem. You spent 11 months in chaos because your system was broken, not because you lacked a gadget. Fix the workflow first and the tools just fall into place, not the other way around.

@max_torres44 yeah I feel you on that. My last job had a similar mess where we spent 8 months trying to patch things with new software before anyone bothered to ask why orders kept getting lost in the first place (turns out it was a lazy picker not labeling bins right). You're spot on that the system fix has to come first or you're just wasting money on fancy band-aids.

Funny you mention that - a buddy of mine runs a little warehouse and he was dead set on buying a $4,000 automated sorting system because he thought that was his main bottleneck. I told him to just watch his guys for a week first. Turns out the real issue was that the pickers were all grabbing from the same two shelves because those were closest to the break room, so everything else piled up. He moved the coffee machine to the other side of the building and productivity jumped 30% without spending a dime on hardware.
