Had a compressor blow on a Tuesday and it flipped my whole approach

I was at that old building on Woodward swapping out a unit when the new compressor I just installed shorted out on startup. Cost me $1,200 and a whole day of chasing parts, so now I triple-check every new component before I even touch the old one. Anyone else have a single job that made them redo their whole process?

Oh man, I feel this in my bones. I had a similar thing happen with a condenser fan motor that seized up two days after I put it in because I didn't catch some debris in the housing. Cost me a Saturday and a lot of angry customer calls. Now I take a tiny flashlight to every new part and inspect it like a pre-flight check. It's annoying slow, but I'd rather eat the extra ten minutes than burn another weekend chasing my own mistakes.

Heard the same thing from a buddy who does appliance repairs. He skipped checking a brand new compressor clutch for a tiny crack and had to rip the whole job apart again three days later. Told me now he treats every new part like it's already broken until he proves it's not.

Pre-flight check is the perfect way to put it, I'm stealing that phrase for sure. Tiny flashlight is a solid move too, I've been using a headlamp but the shadows keep messing with my depth perception. Do you ever have days where you feel like you're just going through the motions too fast and miss the little stuff? That debris story is the kind of headache that makes you slow down for the rest of the week. Smart way to build a habit from a bad experience though, those lessons stick the hardest.
