Heard a veteran tech in Boise say he never uses a torque wrench on injector hold-downs

He was working on a 6.7 Powerstroke and said after 30 years he just goes by feel with a regular 3/8 ratchet. Said he's never had one back out or strip. That goes against everything I was taught at the trade school in Spokane. Has anyone else run into old timers with methods that break the official rules but seem to work?

Can you really trust feel on something that critical? I was taught that torque specs exist for a reason, especially on high-pressure fuel systems. That veteran's luck doesn't make it a good rule for everyone.

Torque wrenches can lie if they're not calibrated right.

Read a case study where feel caused a catastrophic fuel line failure.

Yeah, that's scary stuff. Makes you really think twice about skipping the torque wrench.
